Are you a Visitor or a Resident of the Internet?
What motivates people to use the Internet? Are you a visitor or a resident of the Internet? These are questions I have not really dedicated much time to reflect on.
Because of some privacy issues arising with the use of social media, I was very hesitant about putting myself out there in this digital social media driven society. To this day, I have used different tools of communication such as Facebook, Schoology, and Edmodo. I use Facebook primarily to stay in touch with friends and family that live outside San Diego and the U.S.A. Also, I have used Schoology and Edmodo to provide students with educational resources, to open discussions and create assignments.
After watching the video presentation by Dr. White, I identified myself more as a visitor than a resident. With my limited experiences with social media, I have not established nor maintained an online presence. I see the web as a toolbox collection as the resident sees it as a social space.
Being in this Masters program, I am beginning to take small steps “milling around the park “ and not just “rummaging around the toolbox” (White, 2009)
“It is not about academic or technical skills, it is about culture and motivation” (White , 2009)
